We are a voluntary group here to help anybody who wants to promote, learn or pass on their mother tongue. Whether you are a parent trying to pass on Urdu or a Ukrainian speaker looking for others to learn from or talk with. We are here to help, support and encourage one another in mother tongue matters.
Our languages are often the only culture left us in an ever moving ever changing world. We want to help you build on the genius of our ancestors to guide us in this world of permanent change and improvement.
My own mother tongue is Punjabi and I have begun passing it on to my children. They will be bi-lingual, opening them up to the culture of their family and the language skills to develop other language knowledge.
My husband’s mother tongue is Gaelic, but it was not passed down to him. Now he realises that it was something that he seriously missed. Never too late he is attempting to connect with the language of his forbearers. And that is one of reasons that mothertonguematters.com has been created; to help us make those connections.
Hundreds of languages are dying out each year, lost to future generations. We have to try and protect and nurture what is so beautiful and wonderful about the people we come from.
